We get a lot of calls from customers and clients asking about this. The direct answer is yes. The top hat section is there to provide space from your vapour barrier (breathable paper attached to the wall frame) and to allow good air flow between the main structure and the external cladding.
This not only delivers a better cooling process to the building, but also gives your cladding material of choice longer life by separating it from any condensation. Another big point to always remember is: no gap, no warranty from VMZinc. There is no requirement on this with Copper and Colorbond, although we must insist that it is done for any products coming out of our shop.
VMZinc have documented this in the procedure manual and state that if this is not done, they cannot warrant their material. The bottom line: top hat your wall for interlocking panels, every time.
